Nurturing Young Minds Through Alternative Education

Epic Academy stands as a distinctive alternative school program nestled in Gowanus, Brooklyn, focusing exclusively on kindergartners, first graders, and second graders. This specialized institution caters to special needs students who have encountered setbacks within the traditional school model. By offering a comprehensive year-long curriculum that aligns with New York State education standards, Epic Academy strives to bridge educational gaps and empower its students.

Within its walls, students are welcomed into sensory rooms, an engaging rock climbing wall, and reading spaces tailored to address the challenges they've previously faced in conventional classrooms. For its grand opening in September 2018, the school's board was determined to infuse the building with a distinct identity, a place that the new students could wholeheartedly call home.

In the mural project, ALBOE aimed to incorporate the foundational essence of education—the ABC's. This fundamental element serves as a cornerstone across all learning systems, irrespective of individual abilities. The mural also featured symbols representing the core subjects offered at Epic Academy, such as English, Mathematics, Science, and more.

Throughout the mural's creation, the sounds of children singing the ABC's echoed in the background, infusing the process with a sense of joy. This transformative experience resonated not only with the children but also with the adults and kids within the block and the Gowanus community at large. It stands as a resounding success in ALBOE's journey.
